Berlin-correspondent Oli spoke with the Zoo Aquarium Berlin, which first suggested crab without legs but then, after a better description, even proposed it’s a “Käferschnecke”. Big thank you to an active zoo keeper and his colleges in the
Zoo Aquarium Berlin and Oli. Rene, also from Berlin, posted a link to the theme in the Graugrünen Kasten http://www.wissenschaft.de/wissenschaft/news/256436.html

+++Monterey Bay Aquarium answered+++

We got an answer! Monterey Bay Aquarium made a suggestion.
Gumboot chiton! At the first try to identify, the columnist thought the same, but scrapped this thought because of the red color.

monterey

Now the columnist found pictures in the net on this site:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mountainron/
and here:
http://beachwatchers.wsu.
with the explanation that the red color sometimes, after storm, is rubbed away.

Gumboot chiton, Cryptochiton stellerie, a German name is missing but it counts in the taxonomy to the class of “Käferschnecken” which belong to the “Stachelweichtiere”.

What is it?
Strandbrötchen

Located on the beach in Half Moon Bay, looks like a Bollillo breakfast roll from Safeway, it’s firm like ebonite and inside are something like bone plates. If you know the answer or if you know somebody who maybe knows the answer, please ask and let us know. Our hope is in Berlin, there is somebody who knows somebody who has knowledge in marine biology.

Please discuss with us in the Graugrünen Kasten in the sidebar or use

Summary of the election: Exciting evening in front of the TV, it was like an American ball game:

For Non-Americans it’s not that easy to understand the rules of that game. From time to time it happens something and the crowd is cheering, the rest of the game is boring. Californian voters had also to decide about a lot of propositions.

They decided for example that the death penalty will not be removed and genetic food doesn’t require labeling. We absolutely do not agree with this decisions. The only thing we can do: shaking the head and asking ourselves: WHY?
